Drops from the Ocean // Or Excerpts from Gift of the Sea
4:17 PM
// For Leila there were no Fatherly arms to rush into, nor a Mother’s chest to cry on. Eyes of her own likeness did not comfort her spirit, and parental hands did not grasp her in a everlasting hug. Yet she stood by the window, placidly looking out onto the wide world from her small, humble place, and whispered, “Father I thank you.” If she had not wasted all her tears she would have cried then; not a painful weep where one’s heart is stabbed, but a sprinkle of gladness so thankful, so much full of hope, that water comes from the eyes uncontrollably //
// In all, Leila decided, it was a song worth listening to, for you yourself were singing it, but it had been written by a more supreme power than your own //
// One flame, however, as orange as carrots and as wild as fire, swam in Charlie’s eyes as if it was not on the out but on the in; that through the cool and the wind and the night so treacherous, it was inside of her, keeping her warm whatever may come //
// All the while Nana was watching those big, blue, frightened eyes-those baby eyes-she did not see the teenager, she did not see the tomboy, she saw her sister’s baby, alone, frightened, orphaned and injured //
// Nay, that is where the best story lied, trapped inside those eyes like portals into the past. Those pages were filled with every pain, every joy that life could offer. Death had gazed into those eyes and stripped them of their joy. Some massive ocean had separated those eyes from seeing the one man they loved. And above all, those eyes had never witnessed their likeness in a child; the hardest to bear yet the easiest to see. And here, those two great windows to Nana’s soul were locked onto Leila’s, telling her to love //
// “I love November. It’s so merry. See, the leaves are like confetti, and the trees are throwing them all over the earth.” //
Currently, the whole novel is at 34,000 words (whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa).
Okay, for Nano wise, it's over 16,000.
So far (being a nano-newbie) I think that National Novel Writing Month has helped me. I go in and out of good writing sprees quickly because I keep writing. And pages keep accumulating. And characters grow alive.
Writing is so unique to every person because it is individual. It's the one and only perspective that can come from you alone. Others may find it relateable, but the view through your eyes is like a secret tunnel unexplored. So no matter how misspelled, choppy, or unoriginal it is to you, your writing is worth something because no one else but YOU can give it.
Nano update?
Are your characters alive?

Delete*throws pencil into the air to celebrate* I know 20,000 feels like such a mile marker XD. YES WE CAN WRITE & WRITE & WRITE and fan about all those historic novels and words they used back yonder. Besides we both have these 'M' names that are different (do people pronounce your name weird or is that just for me???). *thanks you for the delicious cookie* *wonders what kind it is*.

20,000 IS A MILE MARKER, MICHAILA! How far into your book are you NOW?!? Yup, that's what should happen. ;) I know! We do, don't we? UM, YES. PEOPLE SAY MY NAME WRONG ALL THE TIME. Like this: "Muh-kai-uh" and I pronounce it: "Muh-kay-uh." One time this lady called me "Micah". XD Do people call you "Mic-kai-luh?" But it's "Mic-ay-la" right? I mean...have I been saying it wrong all this time!??!! ;) I say it the latter way (Mic-ay-luh). Anyways. XD *smiles and says you're welcome* *tells you it was a double chocolate chip cookie* (Meaning it was with chocolate "dough" and THEN chocolate chips. They were good. ;D)
DeleteUmmm...on the last quarter which is kinda scary because I feel like it's going to be short. But I just came up with AN IDEA so hopefully that will help :D
DeleteHaha you just say it like Mick-kay-la, and my nickname is technically 'Mick' but I'd HATE to spell it like that. *drools at ALL that marvelous chocolate*.
