Eleven year-old Mandie's father dies and she's left alone with her heartless step-mother, who sends her to the unsympathetic Bryson's place. Mandie becomes miserable being blamed for things Sarah Bryson did, and besides taking care of their new baby she has to hoe corn and gather the cows, not being aloud to attend church or even go to school. Every week Uncle Ned, her adopted Indian Uncle, visits her until him and his Indian tribe take her away. Arriving Messy at her real Uncle John Shaw's mansion, she meets Jason Bond, his caretaker who says he is away. Mandie and her white kitten Snowball settle in to the mansion and begin to know the people, but they soon get a message that her Uncle John has died in Europe. Soon Mandie and her new friend Polly Cornwallis explore the Mansion, looking for his will. going threw rooms and hallways they find hidden in the giant house a secret tunnel leading to the back of the house outside. Soon people hear about the will and come searching for it, claiming their family. When Joe Woodard comes to visit, one of Mandies true friends and the doctors son, The three friends look for the will, before the fake relatives find it and change it.
